The YPS is a single-shaft shredder built around a hydraulic swing arm rather than a horizontal pusher, and it carries a larger rotor than the SS series it developed from. Those two changes look like details on a spec sheet. In practice they point the machine at a different material.

The clearest evidence is in the capacity row of the table below. On the SS series, capacity is quoted for lumps. On the YPS it is quoted for PE films. Same manufacturer, same class of machine, different reference material — because the feeding mechanism decides what the machine is good at.

Swing arm against horizontal pusher

Both machines face the same problem: a single rotor cannot pull material in by itself, so something has to press the charge onto the blades. They solve it in opposite directions.

A horizontal pusher is a flat plate that travels sideways across the chamber floor. It works on material that has already fallen to the bottom and is sitting there — dense lumps, purge, thick offcuts. Gravity does the first half of the job and the ram does the second.

A swing arm pivots down from above in an arc, pressing the charge downward onto the rotor. That is the right geometry when gravity is not helping you: baled film, loose bags, raffia and other light, springy material that would sit on top of the rotor all day rather than falling into it. The arm reaches over the whole charge and pushes it down, and because it swings rather than slides, it can also break up a bridged mass instead of just pressing against it.

Hydraulic power for the arm runs 5.5 kW on the YPS850 and YPS1050, 7.5 kW on the YPS1250 and YPS1450. That is a substantial hydraulic system for an auxiliary motion, and it is sized that way because on film the arm is doing continuous work, not occasional nudging.

A bigger rotor, and more knives on it

Rotor diameter is ⌀460 mm on the YPS850, YPS1050 and YPS1250, and ⌀480 mm on the YPS1450. Knife count runs 60, 75, 88 and 96 pieces across the four models.

Both numbers are higher than the SS equivalents at comparable rotor lengths, and both follow from the same reasoning. A larger rotor diameter means a bigger cutting circle, which means a bulky charge pressed down by the arm meets more blade surface at once instead of riding on the shoulder of a small drum. More knives on that larger drum means more cuts per revolution, which is what keeps throughput up on material that has to be cut many times before it is small enough to pass the screen.

Blades are square or rectangular inserts bolted on individually in a helical pattern. Two consequences worth knowing: a worn insert can usually be indexed to a fresh edge rather than scrapped, and the helix staggers engagement so the machine does not take one hammer blow per revolution.

The rotor is not one design. Square blades suit rigid waste, where the cut is a straight shear against the counter knife. Angled blades suit film, where a slicing action draws the material in rather than pushing it away.

This matters when specifying, because a machine tooled for one and fed the other underperforms without anything visibly being wrong. Tell us which material dominates your feed and the rotor is configured for it.

74 rpm and a screen, as on any single shaft

The rotor turns at 74 rpm and material stays in the chamber, recut on every pass, until it is small enough to fall through the discharge screen. Screen hole size therefore sets output size, and a finer screen means more recirculation and lower throughput. That mechanism is common to every single-shaft shredder and the YPS is no exception.

What is worth noting is that 74 rpm is almost identical to the SS series at 72 rpm. The YPS is not a faster machine. Its higher capacity at a given rotor length comes from the swing arm keeping the rotor fed and from the larger drum carrying more knives — not from speed.

Three things to read out of this table.

Capacity is quoted on PE film, which is the material this machine is built around — not a best case chosen to flatter the numbers, but also not transferable. Denser feedstock behaves differently, and a fine screen will pull any of these figures down.

Rotor diameter holds at ⌀460 across three models. From YPS850 to YPS1250 only length and knife count change. Diameter governs how large a charge the machine can bite, so if your constraint is the size of what you are feeding rather than tonnes per hour, the only step that changes it is YPS1250 to YPS1450.

Hydraulic power steps once, not four times. 5.5 kW covers the two smaller models and 7.5 kW the two larger. A longer arm sweeping a wider hopper needs more force, but the jump happens once in the middle of the range rather than tracking motor size.

Where the YPS fits against the SS

Both are single-shaft, screen-controlled shredders running around 72–74 rpm with a Siemens PLC. Choose between them on what you are feeding, not on capacity.

Feed is mostly film, bags, raffia or baled light material — the YPS. The swing arm is the reason the machine exists and it is what turns bulky low-density feedstock into a steady cutting load.

Feed is mostly lumps, purge, thick offcuts, pipe sections — the SS. Dense material falls onto the rotor on its own and a horizontal ram drives it in efficiently, without paying for a larger drum and a bigger hydraulic system you do not need.

Feed is genuinely mixed — the YPS is the safer choice, because it handles dense material acceptably while the SS struggles with light material.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the YPS and the SS single-shaft shredder?

The feeding mechanism and the rotor. The YPS uses a hydraulic swing arm that presses material down from above and carries a larger rotor with more knives; the SS uses a horizontal pusher plate and a smaller rotor. Both run at similar speed with a screen setting the output size. The practical difference shows in how each is rated: SS capacity is quoted for lumps, YPS capacity for PE films.

Why is a swing arm better for film?

Because gravity does not help you with film. Loose bags, baled film and raffia are light and springy, and they sit on top of a rotor rather than falling into it. A swing arm reaches over the whole charge and presses it down onto the blades, and its arc can break up a bridged mass. A horizontal pusher only acts on material already lying on the chamber floor.

What capacity can I expect?

On PE film, 500–600 kg/h for the YPS850, 800–1,000 kg/h for the YPS1050, 1,000–1,500 kg/h for the YPS1250 and 1,500–2,000 kg/h for the YPS1450. These are film figures. Other materials and finer screens both move the number, so give us your actual feedstock and target output size rather than picking from the table.

How many knives does each model carry?

60 on the YPS850, 75 on the YPS1050, 88 on the YPS1250 and 96 on the YPS1450. Yes, but the rotor should be configured for whichever dominates. A machine tooled for one and fed the other still runs, it just runs below what it is capable of.

Does a bigger model shred faster?

Not by turning faster — every model runs at 74 rpm. Higher capacity comes from a longer rotor carrying more knives, and from the swing arm keeping that rotor consistently fed. If your bottleneck is the physical size of what you are feeding rather than tonnes per hour, note that rotor diameter only changes at the YPS1450.

What controls the output size?

The discharge screen. Material circulates in the chamber and is recut on every pass until a fragment fits through a hole, so hole size sets the maximum particle size. A finer screen produces smaller, more uniform output at the cost of throughput, because each piece is cut more times before it can leave.
