Their tolerance for variation between bags is close to zero, and that matters more to them than absolute purity. Film blowers — where a single gel loses the order
Blown film is unforgiving in a very visible way. A hard particle or an unmelted fragment becomes a gel that shows in the web or bursts the bubble, and colour variation is on display in the finished product. Film buyers therefore care about melt filtration and colour uniformity more than any other group. For clean PE film scrap, a low-temperature air-cooling granulator avoids the extra heat history that degrades the polymer, and heavily contaminated soft material needs the compaction and filtration of a soft plastics pelletizing system. This is the fussiest of the five, and the price reflects it.
Pipe and profile extruders — the buyers who tolerate the most
Non-pressure pipe, conduit, drainage, decking and fencing profiles absorb material the other groups turn down. Colour is often irrelevant because the product is black or filled, and a wider melt flow band is workable because the die is more forgiving than a mould. What they do care about is contamination that affects mechanical strength and a supply that does not stop. For a new plant this is frequently the most realistic first customer — lower price, far lower rejection risk. Pressure-rated pipe is the exception and sits outside this: it carries certification requirements that recycled content generally cannot meet.
Fibre producers — PET only, and the tightest specification of all
Polyester staple fibre is the largest single destination for recycled PET by volume, and it usually buys washed flake rather than pellets. Two properties decide acceptance: intrinsic viscosity, which determines whether the filament can be spun without breaking, and moisture, because water causes hydrolysis during extrusion and pulls viscosity down further. They will accept colour variation that a bottle-to-bottle buyer would not, which is why mixed and light-blue flake from a PET bottle-to-flake line still has a solid market. Traders and brokers — a channel, not a customer
Traders buy to resell, usually in container quantities, and they exist because the four industries above are not always reachable directly. They are worth using when your volume is irregular, when your target market is overseas, or when you have an off-spec batch that needs a home. The trade-off is straightforward: a trader absorbs the margin and shields you from the end user’s quality complaints, but you never learn what the end user actually thought of the material. That feedback is what improves a plant, so a trader is a reasonable place to start and a poor place to stay.
The Numbers Each Buyer Actually Measures
Everyone runs broadly the same panel. What differs is which result they treat as fatal, and the useful version of that panel is the one with figures attached rather than adjectives.

Moisture is the one that ruins the most deals, and it comes in three tiers set entirely by how far you took the drying:

Contamination is measured in parts per million, not percent. For PET going anywhere near food contact the working limits are total foreign matter under 200 ppm and PVC specifically under 100 ppm. PVC earns its own line because it cannot be separated after crushing — at 1.30–1.45 g/cm³ it sinks alongside PET at 1.38–1.40, so a sink-float tank is blind to it while it removes polypropylene at 0.90–0.91 and polyethylene at 0.92–0.96 without difficulty.
Particle size is set by the crusher screen and nothing downstream changes it: 12–20 mm for PET flake, 8–16 mm for rigid, 60–100 mm for film. Pellets run 2–8 mm depending on the die.

Ash content is the quiet one. It measures inorganic residue — sand, mineral filler, metal fines — and it is the number that reveals how well your washing and separation actually work. Above all, every one of these buyers is testing for repeatability. One excellent sample proves nothing; three consecutive deliveries inside the same tolerance is what turns a trial into a contract.
What Your Line Has to Do to Hit Each Spec
Read the panel backwards and it stops being a list of tests and becomes a machine list. Every number a buyer quotes at you is produced by a specific stage, and if that stage is not in your line the number is not available to you at any price.

To reach below 1% moisture you need two stages, not one. A centrifugal dryer at around 1,500 rpm gets you to 0.5–2%; hot air takes it under 1%. A squeezer alone leaves 3–5%, which is fine as an intermediate stage feeding a pelletizer and not fine as a finished product. If your buyer specifies below 1% and you have no hot-air stage, you are not going to argue your way to it.
To hold PVC under 100 ppm you need a sorting belt with a pick station and metal detection, positioned before the crusher. This is the one specification that cannot be recovered downstream, because after size reduction the contaminant is the same size and the same density as the product.
To hit a stated flake size you choose a crusher screen. That is the entire mechanism. A screen change is cheap; discovering after installation that your buyer wants 8–16 mm and your line was configured for 60–100 is not.
To deliver an even pellet with no gels you need melt filtration, which means a pelletizing line with a screen changer running 40–120 mesh. Film blowers reject on this and nothing else will satisfy them.
To supply a consistent colour grade you need input sorting, because colour cannot be washed out or filtered. This is a feedstock purchasing decision disguised as a quality problem.

The practical use of this mapping is in the order you do things. Get two or three written specifications from real buyers first, read off which stages they require, and specify the line against that. Recyclate is priced against the virgin resin it displaces, so crude and petrochemical price movements set the ceiling for everyone. Below that ceiling, each industry has its own driver.
Injection moulders track the virgin spread most closely, because their alternative is simply to buy virgin. When virgin prices fall, this is the market that cools first.
Film blowers pay a premium for natural and consistent colour and discount steeply for anything mixed, so your price here is set less by the polymer than by how disciplined your input sorting is.
Pipe and profile extruders are the most stable market of the five. They buy at a lower level but move less with resin prices, which makes them useful ballast in a customer mix.
Fibre producers follow textile demand and its seasonality as much as they follow resin prices, so PET flake pricing does not always move in step with the other four.
Traders price on arbitrage: freight rates, container availability and the gap between two regional markets. Their bid can move quickly in either direction for reasons that have nothing to do with your material.

Where Each Buyer Type Is Actually Found
The channels differ by industry as much as the specifications do, which is why a single scattergun outreach effort rarely works.
Injection moulders are usually local or regional. They are found through industrial estate directories, moulding industry associations and, most effectively, by driving to them with a sample bag. Freight is a real cost on low-value material, so proximity is genuinely part of the offer.
Film blowers cluster around packaging and agricultural markets, and they are reached through packaging trade shows and converter associations. They almost always want a trial run on their own machine before committing, so plan on supplying a few hundred kilos free.
Pipe and profile extruders are often reachable directly by cold approach, because many of them are actively looking for cheaper input and have fewer gatekeepers than the other groups.
Fibre producers are concentrated in a small number of large plants and are mostly approached through PET brokers who already supply them. Getting onto an approved supplier list takes months and is worth the effort, because the volumes are steady.
Traders and brokers find you. Recycling marketplaces, LinkedIn and trade shows will produce enquiries as soon as you have material; the work is filtering the serious ones from the price-fishers.

What to Have Ready Before You Approach Any of Them
The same pack works for all five, and having it makes you look like a supplier rather than someone with material to shift: a one-page specification carrying your actual measured values — moisture, ash, contamination in ppm, particle size, and melt flow index if you sell pellets — a representative sample taken from normal production rather than a hand-picked bag, a statement of monthly volume and how reliable it is, and photographs of your packaging.

Say what you cannot do as well as what you can. A buyer who is told the colour varies between deliveries and plans for it stays a customer; one who discovers it on a production line does not.
