Heavy duty means torque reserve, not a bigger motor

Industrial shredding is the heavy-duty end of size reduction: bulky mixed waste, non-standard feed shapes and material that is not only plastic. If your feed is plastic scrap in a known form, the plastic shredder category is the faster route.

Mixed bulky waste is unpredictable by nature. What sizes the machine is the worst item that can reach the rotor, which is why torque reserve and knife protection come before throughput.

Technical notes from this category

Most of what we build goes into plastic recycling lines, but the shredding platform itself is not plastic-specific. A twin-shaft rotor turning at 8 to 15 rpm does not care much whether it is shearing an HDPE drum, a wooden pallet or a bale of textile offcuts. What changes between those jobs is the knife steel, the screen aperture and how fast the wear parts go.

This page exists because buyers searching for an industrial shredder often are not running a recycling plant at all. They have a volume problem, a confidentiality problem or a disposal cost problem, and shredding is the answer. Be aware of one boundary before you read on. We build the shredding machine, not complete recycling lines for materials other than plastic. If you need a wood pellet plant, a metal recovery line or a hazardous waste facility, the shredder is one component and you will need other suppliers for the rest. We would rather say that up front.

01What Industrial Shredding Is Actually For

Four different reasons people buy one of these machines. The reason matters, because it changes what a good result looks like and therefore what you should specify.

Recycling Reducing material so it can be washed, separated and reprocessed. Here output consistency matters, because the next machine has a specification. This is where a crusher usually follows the shredder.
Volume reduction Cutting transport and storage cost on bulky waste. Here nothing downstream cares about particle evenness, only about bulk density, so a coarse screen and the cheapest adequate knife steel are the right answer.
Secure destruction Product recalls, expired stock, branded packaging, documents. What matters is that the output is unrecognisable and unusable, and often that the process is witnessed and recorded.
Pre-treatment for disposal Reducing waste to meet a landfill or incineration specification, or to feed a waste-to-energy plant. Here the receiving facility sets the particle size and you specify the screen to match it.

Telling us which of these four you are doing changes our recommendation more than telling us the material does. A volume-reduction job and a recycling job on the same waste can call for different machines.

02Materials Beyond Plastic, and What Changes

The platform is the same; the wear parts and the expectations are not. This table is written from what actually changes on the machine rather than from a list of industries.

Rigid plastics Predictable and comparatively kind to knives, provided the stream is clean. Standard tool steel is usually sufficient. Screen chosen by what the next machine needs.
Wood and pallets Cuts readily but is abrasive, and nails are the real problem rather than the timber. Harder knife steel plus magnetic separation on the discharge. Expect shorter sharpening intervals than on clean plastic.
Paper and cardboard Easy to cut, but bales are dense and dust is significant. Coarse screen, dust extraction on the discharge hood. Usually a volume-reduction job rather than a recycling one.
Textiles and fibre Wraps around the rotor and shaft rather than cutting cleanly. This is the failure mode to design against. Twin-shaft with close knife clearance, and realistic expectations about cleaning intervals. Anti-wrap design helps; it does not eliminate the problem.
Light metal and cable Blunts and can chip knives. A single hard item can do real damage. Tungsten carbide knives and automatic overload reversal. This is a case where the knife budget needs discussing before the order.
Scrap tyres Tough, with steel belting inside. Reduces well but wears knives fast. Tungsten carbide, coarse screen. See the tire shredder page, and note we do rough reduction, not steel and fibre separation.

We do not publish knife life figures by material, because they depend on contamination we cannot see from here. What we do is quote the steel grade for your material and supply the wear part list so you can budget against your own stream.

03What We Do Not Do

Industrial shredder is a broad search term, and a good part of the traffic that reaches this page is looking for something outside what we build. Rather than have that surface after three emails, here it is now.

Complete non-plastic recycling lines We build the shredder. Wood pellet plants, paper repulping lines, textile fibre recovery and metal separation plants each need equipment we do not make. We are happy to be the shredding stage in a line other suppliers complete.
Hazardous and medical waste These need certified containment, controlled emissions and often regulatory approval of the whole installation. That is a different class of equipment and a different compliance burden, and we do not supply it.
Fine grinding and powder Our shredders deliver 20 to 100 mm and our crushers deliver 8 to 16 mm. Producing powder is pulverising, a different machine family we do not build.
Metal-only shredding Car bodies, white goods and scrap steel need purpose-built metal shredders with far heavier construction. Occasional light metal in a mixed waste stream is a different question and one we can quote.
Sorting equipment Optical, X-ray and eddy-current sorting are specialist products. A shredder reduces; it does not sort. If your project needs sorting, we will say so rather than implying the shredder covers it.

If your project needs any of the above, tell us anyway. Specifying the interface properly so a shredder fits equipment bought elsewhere is straightforward, and it is better than discovering a mismatch on site.

04What Drives the Cost of an Industrial Shredder

We quote per project rather than publishing prices. What is stable is which variables move the number and, more usefully, which of them will keep costing you money after the machine is installed.

Rotor size and power The main driver. Across the DS range, rotor length runs 600 mm to 1,600 mm and installed power 15 kW x 2 to 75 kW x 2, giving 400 to 4,000 kg/h.
Knife steel grade Three grades at three price points and three service lives. On abrasive or contaminated material the most expensive steel is usually the cheapest per ton.
Knife count Rises with rotor length, from 12 pieces on the smallest DS. More cutting points give more even output and cost more per replacement set.
Screen aperture A consumable, and cheap to buy in more than one size up front. Finer screens cut throughput and raise power per ton, so specify the coarsest that meets your requirement.
Feeding arrangement Pusher ram, swing arm or plain hopper, plus hydraulic power where needed. This follows from the material rather than being a preference.
What keeps costing Wear parts and downtime. On abrasive or contaminated waste these dominate cost per ton within the first year, which is why the cheapest quotation frequently is not.

After the twelve month warranty ends, knives, screens and bearings are supplied at cost price, because a stalled machine costs you more than the part does.

What is an industrial shredder used for?

Four things, and they call for different specifications. Recycling, where the output feeds a washing or reprocessing line and consistency matters. Volume reduction, to cut transport and storage cost, where only bulk density matters. Secure destruction of recalled or branded product, where the output must be unusable. And pre-treatment for disposal or energy recovery, where the receiving facility sets the particle size.

Can one shredder handle plastic, wood and paper?

The same platform can, with different wear parts and different expectations. A twin-shaft rotor at 8 to 15 rpm shears all three. What changes is knife steel, screen aperture and how often you sharpen: nails in pallets and grit in paper bales wear edges far faster than clean plastic does. Tell us the mix and we will specify for the most demanding component, not the average.

What is the difference between an industrial shredder and a granulator?

Rotor speed. Our shredders run 8 to 74 rpm depending on series, which is what lets them shear whole items, and they deliver 20 to 100 mm. A granulator runs far faster against a screen and delivers 8 to 16 mm, but cannot take oversized material. Many installations use both, shredder first.

How fine can an industrial shredder cut?

Typically 20 to 100 mm, set by the screen aperture rather than the rotor. If you need finer than that, put a crusher behind the shredder. Fitting a very fine screen to a shredder cuts throughput sharply and raises power consumption per ton, and it still will not match what a granulator delivers.

Can it shred material containing metal?

Occasional metal is survivable with tungsten carbide knives and the automatic overload reversal that all our series have through Siemens PLC control. Nails in pallets are routine; a steel bar is not. Deliberate metal content changes the knife specification and the wear budget, so it needs discussing before the order rather than after the first breakage.

Do you supply complete recycling plants for wood or textiles?

No. We build the shredding machine and we build complete lines for plastics only. For wood, paper, textiles or metal we are happy to be the shredding stage in a line completed by other suppliers, and we will specify the interface properly so it fits. We would rather tell you that now than partway through a project.

How is secure destruction documented?

By witness and by record. We can film the run and photograph the output, which is what most recall and expired-stock jobs need. If your requirement is a certified destruction process under audit, that is a service arrangement on your side rather than a machine specification, and the shredder is one part of it.
